Owusu and her father. My father worked in emergency food aid for the United Nations, so we would go back and forth to countries in crisis when I was a child. For example, we lived in Ethiopia during a drought and the civil war. Across the street from where we lived there was a giant shanty town. My father always emphasized that the people outside our compound were not that different from us. They were in the position they were in because of forces beyond any of our control. It was a lesson for me growing up: The same issues can take different shapes, but they exist everywhere—there’s inequality everywhere.
Vogue: You work full-time for a nonprofit organization, Living Cities. Tell me a little about the work you do and how it overlaps with your writing work. Nadia Owusu: I don’t see my writing life and my policy work as totally separate. When I think about cities, I’m asking who a place serves and why, and how those things came to be. What allows people to feel a sense of security and belonging where they live? Those are questions I’m asking in my writing life as well. In some ways, the writing is a way to process and imagine different possibilities. The work I’m doing now has to do with what ideologies are baked into current systems and what we need to do to undo them [and] make them more fair and inclusive. Those are questions I’m thinking about with myself: What are the narratives I believe in, and how can I open up my thinking to understand who I am in comparison with the folks around me?
